AN INSPIRING VISION FOR SAN ANTONIO

Just as the most watched World Cup in history has come to a close, the momentum of the NASL’s San Antonio Scorpions echoes the increasing popularity of the world’s game in the United States. With the opening day of 8,000 seat Toyota Field only 16 months prior, Scorpions owner Gordon Hartman wants Scorpions fans to get excited about the future expansion of their home stadium.
As with Toyota Field’s initial expandable Phase 1 design, the PSD team was tasked with casting an exhilarating vision for the future expansion of Toyota Field, one that would rival the fan experience and atmosphere of any Division 1 soccer-specific stadium in the country.
With a new capacity of 18,000 seats, Toyota Field would see an expansion of 10,000 seats, with over 9,000 of those new seats on a new elevated upper seating tier. Situated directly behind and above the lower seating bowl, the new upper tier would wrap from the northwest corner of the stadium around past the southeast corner. A roof canopy above the new upper tier seating would help with shade and shelter from the Texas elements and further amplify the crowd noise that Toyota Field and San Antonio is known for. With the first row of the lower seating bowl only 17 feet from the touchline and the upper tier seating starting 66 feet from the field line, Toyota Field would maintain its intimate atmosphere in which soccer fans thrive.
NEW PREMIUM SEATING:
In addition to the existing suites on the west side, new luxury suites at the same elevation would be added to the east side directly behind the east lower tier seating and below the new upper tier for a new total of 32 luxury suites. A new East Club on the East Suite Level would be added at centerfield with a view of the field and include premium seats on the East Club balcony. The existing West Suite Level concourse and lounge would be enclosed and upgraded to become the West Club and new semi-private Loge Seating is planned in the southeast corner
at the lower seating bowl level. Club and Suite holders would enjoy a new Club Gate entry directly accessible from the existing VIP parking lots.
San Antonio’s loyal and rowdy supporter groups would see an expanded supporter seating section just beyond the north goal line and enjoy their own Members Club and Soccer Bar planned directly behind their north seating sections. The large Members Club and Soccer Bar is intended to be a gathering place hours before and after a match; it would not only have a raw party atmosphere with a full bar, bar food and TV’s, but the Club Bar would be open all week to become San Antonio’s hot spot for soccer supporters, watch parties and night life.
SOCCER FOR A CAUSE, A “BEACON” FOR SAN ANTONIO:
Gordon and Maggie Hartman’s love for their daughter Morgan, and vision for the entire special needs community, is the specific catalyst that birthed professional soccer in San Antonio via Soccer for a Cause as a way to support Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first ultra-accessible theme park located across the street from Toyota Field. In order to honor Morgan’s contribution to the San Antonio soccer club’s history, an expanded plaza area in front of the main stadium entrances on the east side of the stadium would be named for Morgan and would be a natural gathering space before and after each match.
Just as the Soccer for a Cause venture has been a “beacon of light” for San Antonio and professional sports, the PSD design team proposed that the stadium itself be a beacon for San Antonio. A high powered beam of light is planned to extend from the southeast corner of the stadium high up into the night sky during the duration of Scorpions matches. This “beacon of light” would be seen for miles away from the stadium on match day, reminding San Antonio and the surrounding areas that their team is on the pitch and that Toyota Field is where the excitement is. To extend the fan experience miles outside the stadium, the beam of light will become red when the Scorpions have scored a goal or won the match. The red light will bring all of San Antonio the good news in an instant while simultaneously reminding the community of San Antonio’s Soccer for a Cause.
